St. John Commandaria from Cyprus – Buy online

Commandaria is a unique wine made from some of the oldest grape varieties in the world. The name Commandaria comes from the Knights of St. John, who made it famous throughout Europe during the Crusades.St. John is made from the ancient and indigenous Cypriot grape varieties of Mavro and Xynisteri, which come from the designated area of Commandaria on the eastern slopes of the Troodos Mountains, making it a “Designation of Origin” wine.

Only these fourteen villages have the privilege of producing this unique wine. The grapes grow on volcanic soils that are poor and thin, giving a low yield but high quality. After the overripe grapes are harvested, they are dried in the sun until the water evaporates and the sugars are concentrated inside the berries. The grapes are then pressed and the resulting syrupy juice is naturally fermented in traditional wooden vats.

The wine is then aged in old oak barrels in KEO’s isothermal cellars. KEO’s St. John Commandaria is a blend of different vintages based on the solera system, where young wine is always blended with old wine to ensure a consistent style year after year.

This luscious amber wine has a powerful bouquet with aromas of dried fruit, spice and oak. Ideal as an aperitif, an after dinner drink or as a base for refreshing long drinks.
